Central character(s)[]
Overview[]
Autumn frets about choosing a subject for the assigned summer project. She takes her concern to Poppinstock's surprising school counselor.
Action[]
Ms. Monster informs the only new student, Autumn, about her annual summer project. Each student is allowed to pick a subject of personal interest and must submit a finished project about it at the start of the next school year. Autumn hears some of the other kids' ideas but cannot bring herself to whittle down her topics of interest to just one. Her parents, naturally, suggest library science. Ms. Monster advises Autumn that the school's counselor could help her out. Autumn accepts the idea and goes to meet the counselor, who is none other than the eccentric Joseph Oven. Joe assures her that the summer project is only busywork and ultimately suggests a familiar topic: library science. Autumn storms back to her teacher and demands an exemption, now that she knows Ms. Monster's grading habits. The sly Ms. Monster threatens to sabotage the rest of the grading period, to which Autumn replies that she will merely base her project on a new fraudproof grading system - in short, library science.
