Roderick 'Roddy' Finnegan is one of the kids in the combined 4th and 5th grade class of Poppinstock Academy. A 10-year-old tuxedo kitty, Roddy is perpetually on the bubble when it comes to the activities of the Gemstone kids. He is best friends with Max Zeit but is otherwise rarely able to gain acknowledgment inside of the community. One of the few kids in the comic strip that does not live either in Gemstone Estates or on Copper Road, Roddy nevertheless travels to Gemstone several times a year, refusing to give up his lifelong quest to be noticed by the Sapphire Lake quartet - if only to shatter their isolated worldview. This habit of his almost always leads to an unspectacular entrance, replete with Bud yelling in shock, "Roddy! What are you doing here?"
